Chobe Bakwena Lodge

Bakwena, from Setswana meaning ‘people of the crocodile’ one of the largest tribes in Botswana; embraces the surrounding culture and country as inspiration for its style and hospitality. Our staff are members of the local villages and form part of our responsible tourism initiative through investing in our local communities. Whether you have come to unwind or to have a safari adventure, we are your destination. Activities include game drives or river cruises in the Chobe, fishing trips, bird watching, nature walks and cultural tours.

The personal touch of owner-manager’s, Adam and Jen, can be felt from the hand selected furniture to the food conceptualised by the owners and chefs. Expect simple african-fusion dishes prepared from locally sourced ingredients and inspired by traditional Setswana cuisine. Once you’ve unwound and settled in you may join us in the main entertainment area with its lounge, restaurant and Rain Tree bar overlooking the river, or to cool off in our inviting swimming pool.
To find out more about our responsible tourism journey, please visit our green status page to find out how Bakwena has been built and how we run on a daily basis. We aspire to create a tourism initiative that respects the beautiful environment and its people and that you as the guest have to come to experience.

Chobe is home to Africa’s largest elephant population with a daily migration of these magnificent pachyderms from their foraging grounds in the Teak forests, to the mighty Chobe to quench their thirst. Naturally, most activities are based around game viewing, either by vehicle or boat.

We do however offer several options tailored to our guests:

Game Drive: generally a three hour activity in the Chobe National Park, early morning offers the best chance to spot some of the shier big cats, however all times of the day offer unique experiences!

Boat Cruise: definitely the most sedate method of game viewing, interrupted only by the harrumphing hippos! The Chobe River has one of the highest concentrations of bird species in the world, from the elusive Finfoot to the regal African Fisheagle

Bird watching: by boat, on foot or from the comfort of your own deck; there is a wide variety of species to see including: trumpeter hornbills, crested barbets, weavers, Bishop birds, the pin tailed whydah, collared palm thrush and African fin foot.

Fishing: the Chobe and Zambezi river systems are home to arguably the best fighting fish in the world (pound for pound) – the mighty Tigerfish. The river systems are also home to a number of other worthy angling species, including catfish, pike and Tilapia species.

Guided Bicycle Tours & Village Walks: We encourage all of our guests to take part in our Guided Bicycle Tours and Village Walks. These are complimentary, not at any specific time nor for any particular duration. They are outings that we offer to our guests as part of our Social Responsibility Programme. It is very important to us that guests who choose to stay at Chobe Bakwena Lodge have the opportunity to learn about and experience the local customs and culture of the Kazangula community.
