Meru National Park was the home of Elsa the lioness, made famous by Joy and George Adamson in the film ‘Born Free'. An arid park dotted with gigantic Baobab trees, and crystal clear palm-fringed springs and streams. The lodge is named after Elsa, freed here by George and Joy Adamson. The word Kopjemeans ‘small hill' in Dutch or Afrikaans.

The game is shy but plentiful and truly wild. Common sightings include Eland, Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, Elephant, Grevy's Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Grant's Gazelle, the elusive Lesser Kudu and of course, the predators, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and Hyena. The Kenya Wildlife Service has released Giraffe, Zebra, Elephant & Rhino into the Park to restock the game levels. Lions are regularly heard and seen around Mughwango Hill.

Elsa's Kopje is situated on Mughwango Hill, the site of George Adamson's original camp. It has breathtaking views over the plains of Meru National Park in front and to the foothills of Mt. Kenya behind. At an altitude of 700m (2,400 ft), it is generally warm with minimum humidity and very comfortable.

Each cottage is spacious and unique, constructed using natural materials incorporating features of the hillside. The large four-poster beds, romantically swathed in insect proof nets, look out across the plains towards the distant Nyambeni Hills. All cottages have en suite bathroom with shower or bath, & flush toilet. The family cottage has two adjoining bedrooms (double and twin); sitting room & mezzanine level with bed.
