Hog Hollow Country Lodge

Just 18km East of the coastal town of Plettenberg Bay along the renowned holiday destination of the Garden Route is Hog Hollow Country Lodge & Villa, set on the edge of indigenous forest with breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and Tsitsikamma Mountains.

The Villa at Hog Hollow is 400m from the main Lodge overlooking the forests and mountains. This spacious three-bedroomed house includes a games room, swimming pool, barbeque facilities and a central eating area . Ideal for families or 3 couples travelling.

Relax at the long blue pool – soak up the sun, take a sauna, or have a massage on the treatment deck. For the more energetic there are magnificent horse trails or a forest walk to various sanctuaries across the valley.

Overlooking the Matjies River Gorge, this congenial hub is where it all happens.
Kick off your shoes, grab a icy drink from the bar and relax. There are three lounge areas to escape to with a book, a pair of binoculars, or just your thoughts. The reading room offers a quiet haven and a leafy vista of the indigenous forest valley and Tsitsikama Mountains. If you’re a bird lover we advise you to head straight for the Ficus lounge where an ancient fruit-laden tree is a favourite with Plett’s prolific bird community.

The pool lounge leads out onto cool blue waters where you may find others lazing about on comfi-recliners.
The Boma is a place for festive occasions and the day’s end where guests can kick back on a pile of comfy cushions, a fire crackling nearby, and their favourite night cap in hand.

Hog Hollow is well known for its delectable food. On crisp clear mornings, farmhouse breakfasts are served on the boma deck overlooking the forest and mountains, or near the huge fireplace when it’s cooler.

A splendid buffet array with all the little special treats and of course a bit of bubbly to begin the day and a seriously scrumptious variety in the hot breakfast section too.

We start our dinners out at the boma – with tasty little treats to whet the appetite.
It’s a festive occasion as the day ends and the full splendor of the African stars shine down on deck.
Then our hosts invite you in to wine and dine in the candle-lit main house.
“We have a little tradition at Hog Hollow …” the host begins … but you will have to come and visit us to see what it is!

At the centre of the Main House is our famously large dining room table!
If communal dining is not your thing, there are lots of lovely little areas where you can dine privately. Just ask your host.

The sixteen suites are all situated in the gardens surrounding the main house. Decorated in earthy colours, with hand crafted artefacts scattered throughout, all feature king size beds (or twin if you prefer), a well stocked mini bar and a hi-fi. Sit out on your private wooden deck listening to the sounds of a garden humming with life, enveloped in the warmth of the African sun.

  • No TV, but the view is better than Sky!

  • A South African bed time story (don’t worry, we don’t test you!)

  • A hot water bottle for those chilly winter evenings.

  • Our homemade Lemon syrup (complete with recipe) – it’s deliciously refreshing

  • Hand-baked cookies in tightly sealed jars as the monkeys do LOVE to eat them too.

There are three double storey suites suitable for families with children aged 12 or under sharing with their parents. Children are accommodated downstairs on a double sleeper couch and an ottoman, slightly shorter than a single bed but wider.
We organise baby-sitting, special turn downs each evening with a glass of fresh milk, a Gingerbread man, children’s stories and a whole box of toys and other interesting things. And we have buckets and spades and body boards for those lazy family days at the beach. There is a communal TV in the Far Lounge at Hog Hollow, but none in the rooms and no fireplaces in the double storey suites!

Hog Hollow Country Lodge is set on the edge of the Matjies River gorge and as such it has a very steep landscape profile. Please also be aware that there are drop-off’s from the balconies and decks. The family rooms do have specially designed balconies which are higher with vertical poles. We have unfenced dams and an unfenced pool on the premises so parents and children are asked to be very careful when around these areas. No children are allowed at the pool/dam areas if they are not in the care of their parents and/or legal guardians. Please don’t feed the monkeys – they are absolutely adorable, but we need to keep them in their natural wild habitat and not encourage any form of domestication.

WHAT TO DO

The choice is yours: laze around the pool on balmy sunny days, relax in the sauna, have a massage on the treatment deck (or in your suite), read a book; or you can travel a little further.

We’ll take care of the planning and bookings for you. Not only are there over 50 charted walks in and around the area, but you can walk or take a horse ride from the lodge through the indigenous forest to Monkeyland Primate Sancutary or The Birds of Eden or The Elephant Sanctuary.

Visit the wild cats at Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre or Jukani Wildlife Sancutary, and if you like the more slithery things we even have a Snake and Crocodile sanctuary. Not to mention a little further up the road there is the HIGHEST bungy in the world and the Treetops Canopy tours...

About 20km from the lodge is our local town, Plettenberg Bay, edged by warm Indian Ocean sandy yellow beaches with the Robberg Peninsula as an ever present backdrop. Here you will find many things to interest you.

From a boat-based whale and dolphin trip around the bay with Ocean Blue Adventures, to walks on the Robberg Peninsula. Discover the midden at Nelson’s Cave which traces humankind back over 100 000 years! Or you might like to take a little boat up the Keurbooms River and explore the natural sandy coves. If you are very brave, what about a Tandem Ski Dive?
