Mukambi Plains Camp

The Busanga Plains Camp is one of the seasonal bush camps of Mukambi Safaris, deep in the heart of the famous Busanga Plains, a stunning wetland area. Mukambi Plains Camp is a personal and intimate camp, set on a small palm tree island in the middle of the vast Busanga Plains. This most Northerly and remote camp in the Kafue  is an exciting 6 hour drive from Mukambi Safari Lodge through the bush of the Kafue National Park. A trip to the Busanga Plains brings you back to the days that a safari took an exciting trip to reach your destination. Every journey called for a sense of adventure, a desire to explore the unknown.

Our tented bush camp lies in an area so remote that although famous for insiders, only a few people have discovered the Busanga Plains. It is only accessible four months a year.

Here lions and cheetahs prey on animals such as wildebeest, roan and buffalo to name a few. Lechwe and puku graze on the central swamps while the shy sitatunga hides in the papyrus reeds. Crowned and wattled cranes, secretary birds and ground hornbills stalk the grasslands whose openness is interrupted only by tree studded islands.

Here ancient fig trees (the famous One Fig) and palms draw their nutrients from giant termite hills. It is a landscape so distinctive, like no other you will see in Africa.

The Busanga Plains Camp consists 4 big well furnished safari tents (2 twin en 2 double) with en-suite open air bathrooms overlooking the Busanga Plains.

There is a main dining area with bar on a raised wooden deck with an expansive thatch roof. This looks out to the East, allowing for beautiful sun rises to be seen in the morning. A small fireplace on the end of a wooden deck is where the nights are spent warming up and telling stories. Power is limited but solar lights and paraffin lamps are provided in tents. Mukambi is famous for its excellent cuisine, friendly staff and highly experienced rangers.

We do game drives twice a day. One departs at sunrise and the afternoon drive (partly a night drive) leaves at approximately 2 hours before sunset. Drives are 3.5 to 4 hours long. Our vehicles are located in the park, which is a short boat trip across the Kafue River so game drives depart from within the park daily.

Walks leave around an hour after sunrise to avoid the heat of the day. The walks take place in the Kafue National Park itself and are approximately 3 hours (unfortunately not available due to the wet conditions from approximately Dec to May).
