Trogon House and Forest Spa

Trogon House & Forest Spa Bed and Breakfast offers exquisite luxury, suspended in the treetops of a private forest reserve that stretches untamed along the Tsitsikamma Mountains and beyond.

Our bed and breakfast lies within the untouched indigenous forest on the most scenic and unspoilt stretch of the Garden Route, flanking world renowned tourist attractions such as Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and The Elephant Sanctuary. The picturesque seaside town of Plettenberg Bay, with its stunning never-ending beaches, ocean based activities and gastronomic delights is only a 15 minute drive away.

Elevated in the tree tops and using only natural materials, this unique establishment embraces the forest by means of glass walls and sky-lit roofs, inviting the forest inside and creating a true “nature forest" experience.

We offer 6 suites in total, divided into two different Villas:

Malabar Villa is the main part of the establishment, which comprises of one Master Suite and two Double Deluxe suites connected to the villa on a wooden walkway through the forest. Breakfast is served either on the pool deck overlooking the magnificent valley below or inside close to the fireplace on fresh winters mornings. There is an elegant lounge, with a fire place as well as a bar.

Tomba Villa, an exact replica of Malabar is connected to Malabar Villa by means of a wooden walkway meandering through the forest. It comprises of one Master Suite, one Double Deluxe and one Twin Deluxe. Also, with a large swimming pool and deck, Tomba Villa is also available for exclusive use; absolutely perfect for a family or group of friends who want a completely private and luxurious experience.

The wooden walkways that link the two Villa’s take one to The Forest Boma where outdoor dining can also be arranged by prior arrangement - under the cool of the trees on a hot summers day and gently lit by the moon, stars and fire light at night. Absorb the scent of the forest, observe the dance of the fireflies, the serenity of being one with nature and enjoy the company of like-minded people.

At the end of the wooden walkway, you will discover The Forest Spa, and some say the smallest luxury spa in Africa. It can be booked by prior arrangement for your exclusive use. The secluded thatch structure has a glass steam room, a Jacuzzi and a stone fireplace with plenty of candles to ensure a truly cosy and relaxing experience. Various treatments can also be arranged, as can a delicious tapas platter and a bottle of MCC to put the cherry on the top of your self-pampering session.

You will find the Malabar and Tomba Villas are laced in extravagance. With an African artefact collection it took the owners over 10 years to collect and restore, as well as priceless antique furniture and fine silks to put the final touches on this forest haven. There is so much history within the glass windows of Trogon House, and many stories to tell.

Our Master Suites and Double Deluxe Suites all offer king size beds, under floor heating, glass ceilings in the bathroom, and are tastefully decorated, to make it the perfect comfortable home away from home.

Our Twin Deluxe Suite is more suited for children or teenagers travelling with their parents, with the suite having two three quarter beds. Breakfast is served in the Palazzo Dining Suite in the Malabar Villa.

The Forest Spa is situated at the far end of Trogon House, allowing for maximum privacy and relaxation surrounded by the forest and engulfed by the beauty of nature. The smallest and most elite Spa in Africa is available for your exclusive use.

Imagine the crackling of a wood fire, the echo of the forest surrounding you, tribal beats humming gently in the background, the glow of the candles, the bubbling of the Jacuzzi, and the steam of the Sauna…taking you further and further into undisturbed calm.

The cost for this two hour experience is R600, and can either be settled before arrival by EFT or by cash on your departure from Trogon House.

Trogon House and Forest Spa lies concealed within untouched indigenous forest, halfway between the Keurbooms River and the scenic holiday village of Natures Valley. Your journey to Trogon House takes you down a little road called ‘Animal Alley’ where the famous wildlife attractions of the Garden Route are situated. You will drive past The Elephant Sanctuary, Birds of Eden, before ending the tarmac part of your trip at the entrance of Monkeyland. Just to the right of the Monkeyland entrance, there is a clearing in the forest, and the dirt track leads you through and under the canopy of the Tsitsikamma Forest onto our doorstep.

The Forest around us houses all forms of life; birds in particular are in abundance with the rarer Knysna Turaco (Tauraco corythaix) as well as the Narina Trogon (Apaloderma narina) being common sightings for us forest dwellers.

Of course with Monkeyland neighbouring our property, the howling cries of the monkey’s and lemurs can be heard from dusk until dawn bringing an enchanted feeling to this green wonderland.

Our local community known as The Crags is seething with extremely talented craftsmen and creative energy just flows through our streets. From mohair factories, to African local craft shops, delicious little off the beaten track eateries and we even have our own Winery. Bramon Wine Estate produces a wide variety of wine, wines that rival the best the wine route of the Southern Cape has to offer. The Crags has it all for the traveller who appreciates going "local".
