Chumbe is a small forested island just a few kilometres to the south of Zanzibar Stonetown. It is at the centre of a small marine conservation area and is the site of a small and exclusive lodge.

This little lodge is a genuine experiment in environmental tourism. Its whole operation is underwritten by the highest environmental principles and any profits are reinvested in education and conservation projects on the island. This does however mean that you will have to do without a lot of things that you usually take for granted, such as electricity, flushing toilets and that kind of thing.

Chumbe is for people who are prepared to live a little bit on the wild side and who really enjoy nature. It is a very peaceful little place where you really have no choice but to relax.

 

Accommodation: 

Accommodation on Chumbe Island is in many aspects, something really special. It's what Robinson Crusoe could only have dreamt about!

 

Firstly, the bungalows themselves are so brilliantly designed that they provide both privacy and a sense of freedom of living in the open (see Eco-bungalows for more information). Many of our clients find these bungalows exceptionally romantic (honeymooners love them), but any individual with a passion for natural beauty will find these bungalows captivating beyond measure. All bungalows overlook the sea and it takes just 30 seconds to stroll from the comforts of your bungalow hammock to feeling the warm tropical ocean lapping at your feet.

 

Activities: 

 Snorkel through the unique shallow water Reef Sanctuary. Since the park was gazetted, having been recognised for its immense beauty and bio-diversity, there has been no fishing or un-authorised anchoring in the Chumbe Reef Sanctuary. 

 Explore the Forest Reserve 

 Explore the Historical Monuments 

 Take an excursion out SCUBA diving the nearby reefs 

 Discover the footpath leading down into a large intertidal pool overgrown with mangroves and shaded by huge baobab trees, where the seawater rises and falls with the tides and where you may observe many creatures adapted to these conditions
