This is a story of love. And like all great love stories, it starts off with an engaging character (just one for now!), a compelling plot, a dash of drama and more than a little serendipity… made all the more interesting because it takes place far, far away in Africa. Bring on an adventurous soul mate, a shared love of the wild, a long cross-country road trip and you could be forgiven for thinking you already know the ending. But this story is one that continues to keep us all entranced, and we are nowhere near where the credits start to roll!
The twist in this tale is that it starts in London in 1999. In that big, busy, bustling city, where young Beck Edwards, longing for the wonderful wilds of his home country, planned a cross-country 4x4 trip with a friend, met the girl of his dreams, and in no time at all, put together a small tourism start-up. Just when Zimbabwe lurched into one of the most unsettled periods in its history and the world bombed out in dozens of dotcom disasters…
Drama aside, Beck’s upbringing in the Matetsi safari area bordering the Hwange National Park instilled in him a strong sense of place and purpose and prepared him for a life in tourism with bush and hospitality skills. Years later, his story includes a few more intrepid characters – his partners, Gavin Rennie and Beatrice Lehmann – who, alongside Beck and with a wonderful crew, have grown the business over almost 20 years into one that is based on great relationships, real trust and an insatiable urge to share the best of southern Africa with the world.
